Have you ever been wondered ” What is the wps button on a Router ? “
You’ve probably found the mysterious “WPS” button on your router after purchasing a fresh one. However, what does it do and what happens when you press it?
We’ll explain what “WPS” stands for, why it has a button, and how it works.
What is the WPS button on a router?
“WPS” refers to Wi-Fi Protected Setup, which allows you to connect your devices to your router more easily.
When connecting devices to a router, you’re likely familiar with the horrors of default passwords. There is usually a long string of letters, numbers, and symbols on the back of the router that you need to enter in order to use it.
To prevent hackers from gaining access to the router, the default password is convoluted. In the case of an easy password, such as “admin,” a hacker can guess it and gain access to your router. Before default passwords were generated randomly, changing them was a top tip for securing your network.
Due to the strength of these complex default router passwords, it is not uncommon for users to never change them. As a consequence, anyone who reads the password on the back of your router may have access to your Wi-Fi.
However, if someone breaks into your home to read the password to your router, you have bigger problems than someone watching Netflix on your data plan.
Considering it’s relatively safe to assume that anyone within touching distance of your router isn’t bad, why not make a button that acts in the same way? That’s what the WPS button does.
If someone is within touching distance of the router, they can connect a device to it using the WPS button. You can connect a device by pressing a button instead of typing in a lengthy password.
When you press the button, the router begins searching for compatible devices. The device can automatically pair up to any WPS-enabled router if it detects any devices looking to connect.
When nothing connects to the router in approximately two minutes, the router stops looking.
You may not be able to use WPS on all devices. Several newer gadgets no longer support WPS, and older gadgets won’t work with WPS either. It’s difficult to tell if a device is compatible with WPS, but if it is, you’ll see a “connect via WPS” option when you connect it to a new router.
Depending on the router model, the WPS button may look differently. Generally, it’s easy to see. Just look for a button labeled “WPS.” It should be near the back of the device.
In some models, the WPS symbol is used instead, which looks like two arrows pointing at each other in an oval shape.
There is a similarity between the universal recycling symbol and the triangle logo, if the arrow wasn’t there and it were more circular than triangular.
Other buttons will refer to the Wi-Fi Protected Setup as “WPS,” which is simply the term “WPS” written out fully. Don’t worry if your WPS button is labeled differently, as all of the above should still work.
How to use the wps button ? How to connect?
Unfortunately, not all Wi-Fi devices will work with WPS. Systems designed before WPS won’t understand it, and some modern devices don’t care about it either.
If a device gives you the option to use WPS during setup, then it is compatible with WPS. After you choose the router you want the device to connect to, you’ll be asked to either enter a password or press the WPS button on the router.
When the latter option appears during setup, keep the page open and press the WPS button on your router. The route will then start looking for devices that want to connect with it.
Hopefully, it will find yours and bring it on the network without requiring a password.
You should be aware that changing your router password may result in all the devices connected to it via WPS being reset. If you try to reconnect, your device will claim that its credentials have changed.
The solution is to reset your password back to what it was, and everything should reconnect. Then, if you don’t want to do that for some reason (e.g. you changed your password), you can simply tell your device to forget the router and reconnect using WPS.
Also, if you suspect someone has connected to your router with WPS without your knowledge, keep this tip in mind. You can easily change the password, and you’ll lock out unauthorized users.

Is WPS a safe protocol to use?
Your router’s location determines the level of security offered by WPS. What if an intruder gained access to your router and used the WPS button to gain access to your network?
Try adjusting the settings on your router and removing the WPS button if necessary.
You should do this even if you don’t expect to connect any new devices soon. WPS is only useful for connecting new devices. After you’re done, there’s no reason to keep the button active.
What about when guests come over? Creating a separate guest network will allow visitors to connect quickly and easily to your Wi-Fi. Therefore, they can easily connect to the internet, while all your private devices remain safe on your network.
How to disable WPS on your wi-fi router?
WPS should be available in a WIRELESS settings menu. Since each router is different, it’s a good idea to click around. It may be considered an ADVANCED option on your router.
WPS might also be referred to as Wi-Fi Protected Setup. Our objective is to disable it.
WPS is available in two flavors. A PIN version and a button version. It is safer to use the button version, because it requires someone to click the WPS button on the router for WPS to work. It also automatically turns off after a few minutes.
However, the PIN version remains active all the time. It is possible to disable WPS altogether or just the PIN version, depending on your router.
We need to disable at least the WPS PIN. The example above is from a TP-Link router, and shows how the WPS PIN can be disabled, while the button method remains active.
This is fine since the button needs to be physically pressed in order for WPS to be temporarily enabled.
What if my router doesn’t have a WPS button?
You can also set up your Wi-Fi connection with an internet browser if your router does not have a WPS button. Your router should come with instructions on how to do this.
